Gjipe Beach is one of the most breathtaking and secluded beaches on the Albanian Riviera. Nestled between the popular towns of Himarë and Vuno, this small crescent of golden sand lies at the mouth of the dramatic Gjipe Canyon. Towering cliffs surround the beach, creating a wild and untouched atmosphere that feels far from the busy coastal resorts.

Because it is difficult to reach, Gjipe remains peaceful even in the summer. It’s perfect for travelers who want raw natural beauty, quiet swimming spots, and a bit of adventure.

What Makes Gjipe Beach Special

Gjipe stands out for its remote setting and unspoiled nature. The turquoise water is crystal-clear, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Behind the beach rises the narrow Gjipe Canyon, where adventurous visitors can hike a short distance between towering rock walls shaded by wild fig trees and oleanders.

The cliffs block road noise and create a calm, almost secret world. You won’t find big resorts or loud beach clubs here — only soft sand, gentle waves, and the sound of nature.

Because it stays relatively empty, Gjipe is also a favorite spot for wild camping and stargazing at night.

How to Get to Gjipe Beach

Reaching Gjipe is part of the adventure. There are three main ways:

  • Hike from the main road – Most visitors park at the small Gjipe parking area on the SH8 coastal road between Himarë and Vuno, then hike about 30–40 minutes down a rocky dirt track. The hike is steep in places but offers spectacular sea views.
  • Arrive by kayak or boat – For an easier and more scenic route, you can rent a kayak or take a small boat from nearby Jale or Himarë beaches. Approaching the canyon from the sea is unforgettable.
  • Guided tours – Organized day tours are available from Himarë, Vlorë, and even Tirana, which include transport, a guide, and often kayaking or canyon hiking.

Practical Information for Visiting Gjipe Beach

  • Location: Southern Albania, between Himarë and Vuno, about 65 km north of Sarandë and 70 km south of Vlorë.
  • Best Time to Visit: Late May to September for warm water and calm seas. June and September are quieter than peak-season July–August.
  • What to Bring: Good shoes for the hike, plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and a swimsuit.
  • Facilities: Very basic. In summer, a small beach bar sometimes operates, but there are no permanent shops, toilets, or showers. Take all your waste back.
  • Difficulty: Moderate. The hike down is rocky and steep in parts, not suitable for strollers or people with mobility issues.
  • Safety Tip: Bring a fully charged phone and offline maps — mobile signal can be weak near the canyon.

Extra Tip: Explore Gjipe Canyon

If you like hiking or climbing, walk 10–15 minutes inland into Gjipe Canyon from the back of the beach. The narrow walls rise high above you, and in spring a small freshwater stream runs through the rocks. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water — there are no facilities inside the canyon.
